Tab Bar

Use the Tab Bar to navigate the ActivePaper Archive.

This is the starting page for the ActivePaper Archive. From the archive home page, you will select published issues stored in the archive. Once you have clicked an appropriate date in the calendar, the Issue page opens with the selected issue. Search for articles stored in the ActivePaper Archive. In the search page you can specify the search terms, publications, scope, content, and how you want the results sorted. When you click the Issue tab, the most recently viewed issue appears in the Issue page. The Issue page will appear when you select an issue from the Home page, or when you click the Show Full Page icon in the search results. Opens the Last Search Results page with the results of a previous search. You must have run a search to see this page. If you have any questions about how to use ActivePaper Archive, click this tab to open a blank email to send to an ActivePaper support representative. Display this page.

Home Page

This is the starting page for the ActivePaper Archive. From the archive home page, you will select published issues stored in the archive. Once you have clicked an appropriate date in the calendar, the Issue page opens with the selected issue. (see below)

Search Page

Search for articles stored in the ActivePaper Archive. In the search page you can specify the search terms, publications, scope, content, and how you want the results sorted. (see below)

Previously Viewed Issue

When you click the Issue tab, the most recently viewed issue appears in the Issue page. The Issue page will appear when you select an issue from the Home page, or when you click the Show Full Page  icon () in the search results. (see below

Previous Search

Opens the Last Search Results page with the results of a previous search. You must have run a search to see this page. (see below)

Send Email to Support

If you have any questions about how to use ActivePaper Archive, click this tab to open a blank email to send to an ActivePaper support representative.

Home Page

Opens when you open ActivePaper Archive, or when you click the Home tab.

Select an issue directly from the archive.

In the drop menu, select the publication that you are interested in viewing. In the drop menus, select the year and month of the issue. The calendar displayed corresponds to the selected year and month (above). In the calendar, dates are highlighted according to the issues available. To access a specific issue, go to the calendar and click the date highlighted in white. The publication logo of the selected publication.

Select Publication

In the drop menu, select the publication that you are interested in viewing.

Select Year and Month

In the drop menus, select the year and month of the issue.

Select Date

The calendar displayed corresponds to the selected year and month (above). In the calendar, dates are highlighted according to the issues available.

To access a specific issue, go to the calendar and click the date highlighted in white.

Publication Logo

The publication logo of the selected publication.

Search

Opens when you click the Search tab.

Search for a term in the newspaper.

In the text box, type the search terms that you are searching for. Select the publication that you want to search. You have the option of selecting one of three scopes: Archive Period, Date Range, or Entire Archive. Select one of the options to indicate the content that you want to search. Select from the drop box how you want the results sorted Initiate a search according to your specifications. Initiate a search according to your specifications. Click to open a page describing tips on how to search the ActivePaper Archive. Select the check box to search all the publications in the ActivePaper Archive.

Search Term

In the text box, type the search terms that you are searching for.

Search Tips

Click to open a page describing tips on how to search the ActivePaper Archive.

Select Publication

Select the publication that you want to search.

All Publications

Select the check box to search all the publications in the ActivePaper Archive.

Select Scope

You have the option of selecting one of three scopes:

  • Archive Period - if an archive of issues has been separated into more than one collection, you have the option of selecting the collection to search in. If the archive has not been separated, selecting Archive Period is the same as selecting Entire Archive. 

    When you select Archive Period, a list box will appear to the right and list the available collections to choose from.

  • Date Range - set a beginning and ending date for your search.

When you select Date Range, two links appear: 

"Select from Date: Click to open Calendar"

"to Date: Click to open Calendar"

Click the first link to open a calendar to set the beginning date of the date range.

Click the second link to open a calendar to set the ending date of the date range

( - Depending on your browser, you may be required to enter date range information via text box and drop box, in the place of the above calendars.)

  • Entire Archive - set the entire archive of issues to search

Select Content

Select one of the options to indicate the content that you want to search

Sort Results

Select from the drop box how you want the results sorted:

  • Score

  • Title

  • Word Count

  • Date Ascending

  • Date Descending

  • Section

  • Publication

Go

Initiate a search according to your specifications.

Issue

Opens when you:

  • Select an issue from under the Home tab

  • Click the Show Full Page () icon in the search results

  • Click the Issue tab in the tab bar. (If you have previously done one of the above operations)

Allows you to read an issue stored in the archive.

In an open page of the newspaper, click an article title to display an article in the Article window.

Access useful tools provided by ActivePaper. Depending on your preference settings, the full page of the publication is displayed below the toolbar. Click the Previous icon to jump to the Previous page in the issue. Click the Next icon to jump to the Next page in the issue.

Main Page

Depending on your preference settings, the full page of the publication is displayed below the toolbar.

Previous

Click the Previous icon to jump to the Previous page in the issue. 

Next

Click the Next icon to jump to the Next page in the issue. 

Indicates the date of the issue currently being viewed. Select the section that you wish to view. The first page of that section will appear. Select the page size for the issue that you are currently viewing. You can select five sizes (Smallest to Largest). Use the Features menu to select one of the following options: MyCollection, Preferences, Go to Daily, Download Newspaper, Help, About ActivePaper Click the buttons to jump to the previous or next page. In the page number text box, type the number of the page that you wish to view and press Enter. Click the decrease page size icon to reduce the size of the page. Click the increase page size icon to increase the size of the page.

Issue

Indicates the date of the issue currently being viewed.

Section Index

Select the section that you wish to view. The first page of that section will appear.

Page Size
(menu)

Select the page size for the issue that you are currently viewing. You can select five sizes (Smallest to Largest).

More Features

Use the Features menu to select one of the following options:

  • MyCollection - view articles, pictures and ads that you have saved in your personal collection.

  • Preferences - define your personal display settings.  

  • Go to Daily - view latest issues of the newspaper. (if available.)

  • Download Newspaper - download a PDF file of the issue that you are currently viewing. (You must have the Acrobat reader installed.)

  • Help - view this page.

  • About ActivePaper - view version information and other details about the ActivePaper software that you are using to view the newspaper.

Page Selection

Click the buttons to jump to the previous () or next () page. In the page number text box 
(), type the number of the page that you wish to view and press Enter.

Table of Contents

Display a list of articles in the newspaper.

Increase Page Size

Click the increase page size () icon to increase the size of the page.

Decrease Page Size

Click the decrease page size () icon to reduce the size of the page.

Article Window

Opens when you click a title in the issue.

Allows you to read an article.

In an open page of the newspaper, click an article title to display the article in the Article window.

Jump to either a Related article in the same issue, a Page in another issue, an Internet address, or an Email address Jump to the next article segment located on another page. (Available only if article is produced in multiple segments.) Access useful tools provided by ActivePaper.

Jump to a:

  • See Also - Related article in the same issue

  • Page Links - Jump to a page in the same issue, or another issue

  • Web Links - Internet address

  • Contacts - Email address

(The links will not be visible if no links were specified at publication time.) 

links may be located on the Toolbar for Netscape or Macintosh.

Continue

Jump to the next article segment located on another page. (Available only if article is produced in multiple segments.)

From the Article menu, you can Add to MyCollection, Send by Email, Print, Jump to Continuation, and Close. Jump to Continuation is the same as clicking the Continue icon (see above). From the View menu, you can view the selected article in Newspaper View or Quick View; select a Text Size; or view the article in PDF format. Add the selected article to MyCollection (see below). Clicking the Add Item icon is the same as selecting Add to MyCollection from the Article menu. Send the selected article to an email address. Clicking the Send Article icon opens a dialog box allowing you to specify your name, email address, recipient address, and a message. The Send Article icon provides the same functionality as selecting Send by Email from the Article menu. Print the selected article on a printer installed on your system. Clicking the Print icon opens the print dialog box. The Print icon provides the same functionality as selecting Print from the Article menu. Close the Article window.

Article

From the Article menu, you can Add to MyCollection, Send by Email, Print, Jump to Continuation, and Close. Jump to Continuation is the same as clicking the Continue icon (see above).

View

From the View menu, you can view the selected article in Newspaper View or Quick View; select a Text Size; or view the article in PDF format.

Add Item

Add the selected article to MyCollection (see below). Clicking the Add Item icon is the same as selecting Add to MyCollection from the Article menu.

Send Article

Send the selected article to an email address. Clicking the Send Article icon opens a dialog box allowing you to specify your name, email address, recipient address, and a message. The Send Article icon provides the same functionality as selecting Send by Email from the Article menu.

Print

Print the selected article on a printer installed on your system. Clicking the Print icon opens the print dialog box. The Print icon provides the same functionality as selecting Print from the Article menu.

Close

Close the Article window.

Last Search Results

Opens when you click the Last Search Results tab.

Displays a list of articles in the newspaper according to the the search terms and settings that you specified in the page under the search tab.

  • Click article titles to open articles in the article window.

The number of words in the article, the byline, the number of pages, and what section of the publication the article is found. Name of the publication of the article that contains the search terms that you specified in the page under the search tab. The publication date of the issue containing the found article The number of articles found by your search, and the number of articles being displayed on this page. Name of the article containing the search terms that you specified in the page under the search tab. Clicking the article title opens the Article window. Name of the article containing the search terms that you specified in the page under the search tab. Clicking the article title opens the Article window. Click the Preview icon to open a box displaying initial lines of text from the article. Open the article in an article window. Open the newspaper to the page where the article is located, with the article selected. Adds the article to MyCollection and opens the MyCollection window.

Article Title

Name of the article containing the search terms that you specified in the page under the search tab. Clicking the article title opens the Article window.

Publication Name

Name of the publication of the article that contains the search terms that you specified in the page under the search tab.

Issue Date

The publication date of the issue containing the found article

Article Details

The number of words in the article, the byline, the number of pages, and what section of the publication the article is found.

Articles Found/Displayed

The number of articles found by your search, and the number of articles being displayed on this page.

Preview

Click the Preview icon to open a box displaying initial lines of text from the article.

Open

Open the article in an article window.

Full Page

Open the newspaper to the page where the article is located, with the article selected.

Add To

Adds the article to MyCollection and opens the MyCollection window.

MyCollection

Opens when you select the MyCollection from the Features menu in the issue, or when you add an item to MyCollection from the article window or Table of Contents.

Save articles, pictures and ads to your personal collection, and access them later.

Select/deselect an item by selecting/deselecting the associated checkbox. Remove checked items from MyCollection. Remove all items from MyCollection.

Click a title to open the item in a separate article window.

Select Items

Select/deselect an item by selecting/deselecting the associated checkbox.

Remove Items

Remove checked items from MyCollection.

Remove All

Remove all items from MyCollection.

Preferences

Opens when you click Preference in the issue.

Define your personal display settings.

Select the default view for each article that you select. Select the default page size, which will be used every time you enter the newspaper, and can be recalled by pressing the default page size icon in the toolbar of the main screen. Select Enabled to include a help bar under the toolbar. The help bar displays hints and instructions on accessing the Washington Post. 
Select Disabled to remove the help bar. Immediately implement any changes when you click Submit. Otherwise, any changes will only be active the next time that you log on. Save any changes and close the window. If you enabled Apply to current session, the current page will refresh according to selected preferences. Discard any changes and close the window. Greek Page is way of displaying a page with just the headlines and images available - and the text grayed out. Loading in Greek Page format allows you to load a page more quickly, without losing the ability to view each article individually. (availability determined by publisher)

View Mode

Select the default view for each article that you select. Select:

  • Newspaper View - view articles as they originally appeared in the printed version of the newspaper. Articles will be segmented according to the continuations in the printed version.

  • Quick View - view articles as running text. Articles will be viewed as a whole, regardless of continuations.

Page Size

Select the default page size, which will be used every time you enter the newspaper, and can be recalled by pressing the default page size icon in the toolbar of the issue.

Greek Page Type

Greek Page is way of displaying a page with just the headlines and images available - and the text grayed out. Loading in Greek Page format allows you to load a page more quickly, without losing the ability to view each article individually. (availability determined by publisher

Help Bar

Select Enabled to include a help bar under the toolbar. The help bar displays hints and instructions on accessing the newspaper.

Select Disabled to remove the help bar.

( - feature may be unavailable for Netscape or Macintosh)

Apply

Immediately implement any changes when you click Submit. Otherwise, any changes will only be active the next time that you log on.

Submit
(button)

Save any changes and close the window. If you enabled Apply to current session, the current page will refresh according to selected preferences.

Cancel
(button)

Discard any changes and close the window.
